Circles in Clay

Number of Sessions: Two 3-hour sessions (length of day one may vary)

Description:

The focus of this class:
  1. Encourage students to learn the technique of using circular pieces of clay to create a vessel with or without a lid.
  2. Application of an original applique design to the piece.
  3. Explore creating various lids and handles.
  4. Learn the importance of scoring, slipping and reinforcing both the outside and inside seams of the piece.
Variations using the same techniques on other work will be discussed.

Materials
  • Clay of choice
  • Fettling knife
  • Cardboard circle pattern, 8 to 10-inch diameter
  • Scoring tool
  • Trimming tool
  • Optional items for addition to handle: wood dowel, reed, raffia

  • Skill Level/Pre-requisites: Basic or intermediate clay class
